What is contrast therapy?

Contrast therapy, also called hot/cold immersion, means alternating heat and cold. At Dr Refresh that is our infrared sauna, where the air sits about 120 to 150°F, and a cold plunge kept at 38 to 55°F.

Heat opens blood vessels and relaxes muscles. Cold narrows them, and when you step out fresh blood flows back through. Most people use the routine to ease soreness, recover between workouts and leave feeling clear. Sessions in West Hollywood run 30 or 60 minutes in one private room with a shower, alone or as a couple.

Contrast Therapy highlights.

How a contrast session works.

Warm up in the infrared sauna first, then move to the cold plunge and ease in slowly. Step out, warm back up in the sauna and go again. The shower is in the same room, so you finish clean and dressed without walking anywhere. New to cold? Keep the plunges to one or two minutes and build up.

Contrast therapy questions, answered.

What is contrast therapy?

Alternating heat and cold, also called hot/cold immersion. At Dr Refresh that means our infrared sauna and a cold plunge, used back and forth in one private room.

How does it work?

Heat opens blood vessels and relaxes muscles. Cold narrows them, and when you get out fresh blood flows back through. The cold also triggers norepinephrine and endorphins, which is why most people feel alert afterward.

What are the benefits?

Most people use it to ease muscle soreness, recover faster, relax and feel clearer. Many also say they sleep better.

How long is a session?

30 or 60 minutes. Plunges run two to five minutes each; beginners start at one to two.

How much does contrast therapy cost in West Hollywood?

$50 for 30 minutes or $70 for 60 minutes. Couples sessions are $80 for 30 minutes and $120 for 60. Unlimited monthly memberships start at $175.

Can I book with a partner?

Yes. Couples sessions share the same private room with the sauna, cold plunge and shower.

Should I start with hot or cold?

Start with heat to warm up, then ease into the cold. Repeat as many rounds as your session allows.

How often should I do it?

Two to four sessions a week is common for the sauna and the plunge. Start with one or two and build up.

What should I bring?

A swimsuit. Drink water before you come and avoid heavy meals.

Is there downtime?

None. Warm up, rehydrate and go straight back to your day.

Who should not do it?

If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's or heat sensitivity, check with your physician first.

Important safety information

Contrast therapy is safe for most healthy adults. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's disease or are sensitive to heat, check with your physician before your first session.

Drink water before and after, and leave the sauna or plunge if you feel lightheaded or unwell. Experiences vary. This page is not medical advice.
